The Last Thing We Want To Talk About

Grief comes in unexpected surges
Mysterious cues that set
off a reminder of grief
It comes crashing like a wave
Sweeping me in its crest
Twisting me inside out
Then it recedes
Leaving me broken.

Oh Mama, I don't want to eat
To walk, to get out of bed
Reading, working, cooking,
Listening, mothering
Nothing matters...

I do not want to be
Distracted from my grief
I wouldn't mind dying
I wouldn't mind at all.

Classic Stages Of Grief

First Stage: Denial
This stage harbors the feelings of shock and disbelief, we all feel, when something terrible is about to or has happened to us.

Second Stage: Bargaining
This stage is the one of, the temporary truce. It's where we make promises to everyone, even God, if only he will save our loved one.

Third Stage:Anger
The third stage is why me? Why is this happening to my family? Resentment and blame are often misdirected at the loved one, doctors, and God. Why?

Fourth Stage: Depression
In this stage comes the courage to admit to yourself that this is happening. It is this acknowledgement that leads to depression.

Fifth Stage: Acceptance
The stage that is sometimes the hardest to face. It is when you must finally accept the death of a love one and try to move on with your life.

The stages of grief do not occur in any particular order. People experience them with different intensity and they can be felt for days or years. It is a comfort, in some strange way, to know that other people have gone through the similar feelings and have somehow managed to go on with their lives.
