The Lake Of Longing
Chapter One

Jensarie wept. Leaning against the Mother Tree of Widsom, with the lake sprites dancing and humming, she tried to imagine what her life would be like without her beloved mother. Adnil had been the sun, moon, and stars of Jensarie's life. Her thoughts drifted back to two short days ago, when her normally gentle and placid mother woke her from a beautiful dream, in frantic search of her amethyst necklace. Adnil's necklace had apparently disappeared from around her neck as she slept and not a trace of it had been found since.
The necklace, placed around a healer's neck at birth, was not to be removed until they had reached the end of their earthly life. If removed, the healer gradually begins to experience all the illnesses of body and spirit that they had removed from the people they healed. If the necklace was not returned to the healer's neck they would gradually die a painful death. Adnil was already beginning to experience these ills. Her eyesight was beginning to fade and Jensarie decided to try her sapphire stone and the powder she had learned to make to help people who were suffering from problems with their sight, in hopes of helping her mother.
She took her powered agate and mixed it with the juices from the Tree Of Vision, which grew in the Garden of Healing. It usually had a soothing affect but Adnil seemed to feel none of the relief that others had felt when Jensarie had used it on them. She stood at her mother's head and lay her sapphire necklace across her mother's brow.
The sapphire, was a powerful stone, which had cured many, whose eyesight had begun to fade. Placed on the eyes it had restored sight to those almost blind. Jensarie was shaken and stared in disbelief, when the sapphire, usually bright and beautiful, began to pale after only a few moments on her mother's eyelids.
Now as she sat beside the lake, Jensarie replayed in her mind the shock and sorrow she had seen on her father's face, when she had failed to stop the dimming of her mother's eyesight. As Dref looked upon Adnil's face, Jensarie saw that the colors of his aura shimmered with the colors of fear. "We must send for the healing sisters of the Seven Chakras" he said almost in a whisper to Jensarie, "they may be our only hope". "Jensarie, go to the lake, call the sprites and tell them to be swift." "If they make great speed the healers should arrive at daybreak on the morrow."
At the lake Jensarie chanted the ancient rhyme of calling, which was used to call the sprites. The tiny winged creatures carried messages to the healers who lived in different areas of the Kingdom. Sometimes the messages were just greetings, but on other occasions the help of the healers was needed. Each healer could use usually cure common illnesses in the people they cared for, but when stronger power was needed, the healers often called on each other's special powers to heal someone whose illness required a specific birthstone.
"Tiny sprites, friends of mine, " Come to me, a message to find"
